Frequently Asked Questions

Adopting a Bernese Mountain Dog is a significant investment. As a responsible pet owner you should have questions, and as a responsible breeder we are happy to answer them!
SHOULD I CHOOSE A MALE OR FEMALE?

Both males and females typically have sweet and loving temperaments. Keep in mind that Bernese Mountain Dogs won’t fully reach maturity until about 2 years of age. This long “puppy stage” can be challenging, that’s why obedience training is important. All Berner puppies have their own personality and distinct markings. Overall, choosing a male or female is a matter of personal preference. I will help you choose a puppy that will best fit you and your family.

WHAT IS THE LIFE EXPECTANCY OF BERNESE MOUNTAIN DOGS?

Longevity depends on many factors; including heredity, proper care, diet and exercise. Berners have long been known for having a shorter life span compared to some other large breed dogs. However, due to responsible breeding, life expectancy of Bernese Mountain Dogs has increased in recent years. 10-12+ years is no longer uncommon. It's nice to know the gene pool offers the possibility, however this should not be construed as a guarantee for your pup.
WHAT SHOULD I FEED MY BERNESE MOUNTAIN DOG?
Choosing the right food to feed your new pet is crucial to their overall health and well-being and should be done with careful thought and consideration. This is why we choose to feed and proudly recommend TLC Pet Food. (Proudly 🇨🇦) TLC offers the ultimate balance of quality meats, animal fats, vitamins, and minerals, all at a reasonable cost and free delivery! SAVE $5 on your first order on us!

DO YOU SELL PUPPIES WITH BREEDING RIGHTS?
All puppies are sold with a Non-Breeding Contract. As a responsible breeder, we want to ensure our dogs will be used solely as companion pets and placed in loving homes.

ARE YOUR PUPPIES GUARANTEED?
You can rest easy knowing that we have taken the greatest care in producing quality, healthy puppies. Parents have been OFA health tested and cleared as genetically sound. Please see RMK's purchase agreement in the Adoption tab for more details on our Health Guarantee.

In addition, we have partnered with Trupanion to provide a "Go Home Day" special offer. All our puppies will be sent home with 30 days of free Pet Insurance. Coverage includes:
• Immediate coverage, no waiting period
• Coverage for any new injury or illness
• 90% coverage with direct payment
• $250 deductible, no payout limit
(Deductibles are applied once per condition, for pets lifetime!)
Like it or not, puppies can get into mischief. Pet insurance offers peace of mind. We highly recommend maintaining the policy beyond the 30 day trial.

DO YOU PROVIDE TRAVEL FOR PUPPIES? INTERNATIONAL ADOPTION?
As we are located in New Brunswick Canada, logistically speaking, preference will be given to local applicants in the Maritime provinces (NB, NS and PEI), especially that we endeavour to keep in touch with all of our puppies and their adoptive families. That said, we will certainly consider all adoption applications on a case by case basis. If travel is required, we can partner with PetsGo to ensure that your new puppy will journey safely to his or her new home. Pets Go is essentially a travel agency for pets! Based in the Maritimes, they can pick up and hand deliver your puppy anywhere in NB, NS or PEI, or coordinate air travel across Canada or the US. (Costs vary depending on shipping location)

WHAT QUALIFIES YOU AS A RESPONSIBLE / REPUTABLE BREEDER?
Even though we are relatively new to breeding, rest assured that we take the greatest care in producing quality, healthy puppies. We are a member in good standing with the Canadian Kennel Club and the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of Canada. With the betterment of the breed in mind, we've researched the pedigree of our breeding dogs. As we continue to learn through research and by soaking up wisdom from experienced breeders and veterinarians, there’s nothing like the hands on experience of diligently caring for puppies in our home. For us, this is a labour of love. We are not a puppy mill. The welfare of our pets always comes first. We invite you to take a look at our References and Reviews.

Please note: Royal Mountain Kennel is a relatively new breeding venture (est. 2022) and initiating a reputable establishment requires a significant financial investment. Our intention is to have all of our breeding dogs properly health tested and screened. We commit to being transparent and update our site regularly. Thank you for your trust and support.
